Study that an average mutual fund investor made only 29,700 in 20 years on 10,000 investment, instead of 109,800, made certain assumptions on the market timing behavior of mutual fund investors based upon mutual fund flows data. If an investor kept money in a no load index fund, or middle of the road growth and income fund, throughout the 20 year period, fund investor would have indeed made the higher amount after giving up well under 1% in annual fund expenses."
